Ahmedabad Sees Rise in Dog Registrations Post New Year

Ahmedabad: The Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) of the Ahmadabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) began the online registration process for pet dogs residing in the city on January 1, 2025. 

The AMC earlier announced that pet registration would be mandatory in the city from January 1, 2025. Since then, 500 owners registered 581 pet dogs between Jan 1 and Jan 4, according to AMC officials.

Ahmedabad’s western regions saw the highest number of registrations at 365 dogs, with the Eastern areas recording 216 registrations and the Western areas clocking 135 dogs. In the northwest zone, 133 dogs were registered, including Pomeranians, German Shepherds, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers among the notable breeds. Aside from these areas, 20 dogs were registered in the central zone, 91 in the eastern zone, 40 in the northern zone, and 65 in the southern zone.

To further incentivize dog registrations, the civic body will conduct awareness programs in the city. A list of vets for dog vaccinations will also be posted on the AMC’s website to make the vaccination process easier, with rabies vaccinations set to be offered at sterilization centers for pet dogs. The next step of the process will include RFID pet microchipping and licensing. 

For online registrations, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation requires the applicant's name, applicant's email ID, mobile number, and address, applicant's photograph/door owner's photograph, applicant's Aadhaar card, electricity bill, property tax bill, PAN card/rental agreement, dog's name, breed, gender, age, photo of the place where the dog is kept, dog's photo, and the number of dogs.

The central government has also set a deadline to make cities nationwide rabies-free by 2030. To meet this goal, a rabies-free city action plan will be enacted. The policy will outline the responsibilities of pet owners, the online registration process, and annual vaccination certification.  Additionally, designated dog feeding spots and restricted areas where pet dogs cannot be taken will be established.
